CVS Goes Upscale

The first concept store is slated to open by year's end in a major East Coast city, Mike Bloom, CVS' senior vice president of merchandising, told WWD exclusively. Another will open weeks later on the West Coast, he added. Bloom would not elaborate on the rollout strategy, but sources briefed on the initiative said the initial concept stores are planned for Washington, D.C., and Sacramento, Calif., and long-term plans call for 500 to 1,000 stores, with about 100 slated to open in the next year.

A glance at the concept's renderings- which call for brushed steel accents, white-tiled floors and a wall of sea-foam-colored, hand-cut glass tile - seems to indicate CVS has invested heavily in paving the way for its move upmarket. The Beauty 360 units will range between 2,500 and 4,000 square feet in size, and will either be housed in an adjacent store, accessible to CVS shoppers via a breezeway, or a separate store within a CVS store.

Italian Priest Cancels Nun Beauty Contest
The BBC reports that Father Rungi, an Italian priest, has cancelled the Internet nun beauty contest he was planning. Local religious authorities did not approve and spoiled his fun. Reports of the contest caused howls of outrage from Catholics and from women who thought the whole thing was demeaning.

Antonio Rungi said he had never intended to put sisters on the catwalk, but had wanted to erase a stereotype of them as being old and dour.

He had wanted to hold the contest online on his internet blog.

Father Rungi said he changed his mind after the local religious authorities expressed their displeasure.

"My superiors were not happy. The local bishop was not happy, but they did not understand me either," Father Rungi told Reuters news agency from the town of Mondragone, near Naples.

"It was interpreted as more of a physical thing," he said. "Now, no one is saying that nuns can't be beautiful, but I was thinking about something more complete."

He said he had intended to showcase the good works that nuns do, especially in education and health care, so as to boost interest in religious vocations.
